Elena Karamanska is an inspiring woman who, despite being born with glaucoma, has charted a course of exceptional achievements through sheer determination, adaptability, and unremitting hard work. This story chronicles the milestones of Elena’s life, spotlighting her personal growth and professional accomplishments, which have ultimately led her to excel in the field of digital accessibility QA, and the aspirations that propel her forward into the future.
Family dynamics play a crucial role in shaping Elena’s character and resolve. In contrast to the often protective instincts that can accompany raising a child with a disability, Elena’s parents raised her with unconditional love and support. She learned to embrace independence and self-assurance. It was this supportive environment that prepared Elena to face and overcome any obstacle as it arises.
Starting with her early education, Elena transitioned from a specialized school for the visually impaired to the English language high school in the eighth grade on her initiative. Initially accepted at The Hague University, she eventually chose to complete her studies at New Bulgarian University (NBU). Although life abroad initially seemed attractive, dissatisfaction eventually led her to return to Bulgaria, where she graduated with honors in law.
Upon graduating, Elena faced the daunting task of carving out her space in the professional world. Her initial encounters were challenging, facing rejection thrice from the “Positive action” program of the Council of the EU’s General Secretariat. Yet, undeterred by these setbacks, Elena’s persistence bore fruit when she was finally accepted into the program. As a dedicated trainee, Elena played a crucial role in preparing for key Council meetings, attended Parliamentary sessions, and conducted in-depth research on social and employment issues. She is proud to have witnessed the crafting of a European directive that increased the inclusion of women on corporate boards of directors.
“To avoid getting sidetracked, I don’t immediately share that I can’t see.”
Elena shared this quote in the context of her work experience. With these words, she emphasizes the importance of focusing on abilities rather than disabilities. She believes that people with disabilities should be evaluated based on their skills and qualities, not defined by their physical limitations.
Her transition into becoming a digital accessibility specialist began during the pandemic, when she pursued formal certifications in accessibility, aiming to further her expertise through web accessibility certification in the future. Her proficiency and dedication did not go unnoticed, leading to her appointment at AIOPSGROUP, where she now works as a digital accessibility QA. In this role, Elena ensures that our clients’ digital operations are navigable and inclusive for all users, a mission that is both personal and professional.
Looking ahead, Elena continues to develop her career. Her current role as a digital accessibility specialist allows her to combine her legal background with a deep commitment to inclusion. She wants to pursue her ambition to one day start her own digital business. Although she has not yet decided on the specific area or format of her business, it’s clear that she will bring the same passion, determination, and resilience that have helped her throughout her life.
